Svitzer: The Tug Master

ABOUT
A day in the life of Sam Kerr, Tugboat Master with Svitzer at Fremantle Port, shot for TAFE's graduate series with PerthIsOK!. The film rides along through a working shift on the tugs, then follows Sam home, telling the story of the job through the person doing it and the family it supports.
APPROACH
Working tugs don't pause for a film crew. Ship-assist jobs run to the port's schedule, so we shot inside Svitzer's operations as they happened, small crew, quick setups, staying out of the working lines. The family half of the film is what gives the port footage its meaning, because the job reads differently once you've seen who's waiting at home, and the edit moves between the two until they feel like one life.
IMPACT
The film shows the reality of a maritime career from the wheelhouse rather than the wharf, and the access is the point: live tug operations in a working port, with a crew that's inducted, insured and comfortable on the water. For ports, towage and offshore clients, this page is what shooting inside your operation looks like when it goes right.
