Kariyarra: Keeping the Stories

This project was led by Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation, working with Mineral Resources. We were booked for a planned cultural visit, but once we sat down together the purpose changed. The Corporation asked us to help document the knowledge of one of their Elders, a custodian of many stories and places whose health was declining, so it could be held and passed on to those who come after him.
APPROACH
We followed the community's lead the whole way through. Alongside Kariyarra representatives, we spent time on Country, in the places these stories belong to, and recorded the Elder's words where they were meant to be told. Our job was to document with care, to hold the camera and step back, and let the knowledge and the Country speak for themselves.
IMPACT
The result is a record made for the Kariyarra community, a way of keeping a custodian's stories for the generations after him. The value here has nothing to do with reach or numbers. It sits in the trust the community placed in us to help carry something this important, and in the fact that these stories are now held for good.
